Once again it’s tulip time.  The fields and display gardens are a blaze of color and Skagit Valley is packed with people enjoying the view.  Anacortes is far enough away (15 minutes) to eliminate the crowds and congestion.  The Tulip Festival will go on all month, with art shows, salmon barbecues and wine tastings.  There will be a street fair in Mount Vernon this weekend — lots of lovely things made by local artisans.  Anacortes restaurants are ready for guests, and of course Autumn Leaves is open for business.  See you soon!

Shipwreck Day Saturday

Anacortes Arts Festival

Anacortes Arts Festival

Tomorrow the streets will be blocked off for a huge garage/antique/junk sale.  This is a forerunner of the Arts Festival, which will take place at the beginning of August.  I like Shipwreck Day, but I LOVE the Arts Festival.  Over 200 booths, most items made by local artisans and all interesting and unique.  Fabric art, glass, pottery, paintings, photography, yard art, food, jewelry, it’s all there August 5-7.  Reserve your room now because the town will be bursting at the seams.

July events in Anacortes

Lots going on this month in Anacortes.  4th of July concert, fireworks and parade.  Wed and Fri night concerts in the park (free!).  Shipwreck Day on the 16th, Highland Games in Mount Vernon on the 9th and 10th, all leading up to the Arts Festival the first weekend in August.  Our summer weather is usually perfect: not too hot, not too cool.  Sit outside and sip wine or iced tea, hike by the water or in the woods, shop til you drop and follow it all up with dinner at one of Anacortes’ excellent restaurants.  It doesn’t get much better than this!

Early spring?

Many of our daffodil leaves are over 3″ high already, which may indicate early blooming for the spring flowers.  Tulip Festival (all of April) is right around the corner!  Also in April is the Anacortes Wine Festival on April 9.  30 WA wines will be available for sampling, as well as food treats from local restaurants.  That same weekend you could go to the boat show and the winter farmers’ market.  The town will be busy so make your reservations soon.

Anacortes concerts in the park

We have been so fortunate the past few years to have once or twice a week concerts at Seafarers’ Park, put on by the Port of Anacortes.  The background is absolutely beautiful, Cap Sante, the water and islands.  And the talent has been first rate.  It is free, we just take our own chairs and a picnic.  The Port allows wine.  It’s a wonderful way to end the week.  This Friday August 28 is the last of the season.  If at all possible, come and take part!

What’s next in Anacortes?

There are still lots of things happening in Anacortes.  Concerts in the park on Fri. nights.  Beer on the Pier October 2 and 3.  Oyster Run in Sept.  And our wonderful restaurants, forest trails, whale watches, theatre and fabulous scenic attractions continue on.  In fact, autumn is a wonderful, gorgeous time here.  It might be chilly or rainy, but it’s very fall-ish, lots of pumpkins and autumn colors.  After that will be spring, and what could be prettier than daffodils, rhodies and lilacs, then tulips.  This is a great place to visit and an even better place to live.  Why go anywhere else???

Shipwreck Day is almost here

July 18 is Shipwreck Day!  A giant flea market covering many blocks of the main street.  Trash or treasures, books, furniture, clothing, toasters, dishes, decorations, tools, DVDs, fishing equipment–you name it.  Leave the dogs at home and put on your suntan lotion.  You might end up on Antiques Roadshow with your fabulous find!

Too late for tulips?

Tulips are still blooming and the display gardens will probably go on for another week or two.  So if you can’t make it this week, is it worth coming the next?  YES!  April 17-19 is the Mount Vernon street fair.  Art shows and wine tastings will continue all month, as will the Anacortes Quilt Walk.  Kiwanis salmon bbq goes on every day through 4/26.  If you can make it sooner, the Anacortes wine festival is 4/11, Art of Gardening 4/26 and boat show 4/10-12.  Paccar open house is 4/11.  Of course, all the cute shops and wonderful restaurants are open all the time.  Right now the weather is perfect for just sitting on the patio with something nice to drink.  Come join us!

Anacortes Arts Festival

All weekend (Friday, Sat. and Sun, August 1-3) the Arts Festival takes up around 15 blocks of Commercial Avenue.  Today was the best day to go, as it will be more crowded on Sat and Sun.  Comments I overheard today:  “These things are usually so junky but all this stuff is really good!”   and   “This is a cute little town.  We should come back and stay for a few days.”

We sat and listened to music today, bought a soft drink and curly fries, looked at all the items on sale and bought a few things.  The weather was perfect, it was a great day.  I hear that there will be a surprise downtown tomorrow, we’ll have to wait to see what that is.  We are full all weekend but have one room available on Sunday night.   If you didn’t make it this year, plan on coming next year and spending all day downtown.  Then a good dinner, a walk around the marina and a comfortable bed.  What could be better?
